Alison Brie, who plays the character of Annie in the show, spoke about the show and what it’s like to be added to the cast.
“I have to believe that anyone who is hired to work on our show is there for a reason,” Brie said, “and that reason is because they want to push boundaries, they want to try some really out there stuff and because they really love our show.”
The show was just picked up for a new season, and has always been known for its offhanded humor.
“I anticipate doing stuff in the same vein that we’ve already been doing and really kind of keeping the show true to itself in that way, in that very kind of experimental way,” she said. She adds that she has thought about how the show could become a drama without changing any current characters.
“I think it’s one of the interesting things about the show, is that if you really examined each one of these characters, a lot of them have dark, really dark stuff going on,” Brie said. “But it’s a comedy so we’re just kind of like making fun of ourselves at all times. Annie just has her pill addiction past, she really doesn’t have any family, she doesn’t speak to her parents, like it would be easy to tip it one way, change the tone, use these characters just as they are and make it a drama because there’s some dark stuff going on. Thank God we have hilarious writers that make the show funny.”
Brie also hints that the kiss she shared with Danny Pudi’s character Abed last season could be a sign of things to come for the two characters. Or, maybe not.
“I wouldn’t mind Annie having a romance with Abed, or anyone,” she said. “I guess Britta would be my second choice.”
The new season of Community will premiere on NBC on Oct. 19, but is moving from Thursday to Friday nights.
