Phillip Phillips Is
American Idol Champ!

Spoiler alert! Georgia native Phillip Phillips won the coveted American Idol crown on Wednesday night, surprising pretty much no one. The biggest surprise of the night, though, came courtesy of former contestant Ace Young.

Phillip Phillips wins American Idol

Can't say we're too surprised: Phillip Phillips won the 11th season of American Idol on Wednesday night, beating runner-up Jessica Sanchez for the top honor. The 21-year-old managed to bring in a majority of the record 132 million votes, according to host Ryan Seacrest.

The Georgia native was the clear frontrunner for most of the season — judge Steven Tyler put it best when he explained the win.

Kohl's launching line inspired by American Idol >>

"Sometimes you have to realize the rules of this show are every time you gotta bring it," he told E! News. "And whatever it was [fans] loved the last time, you gotta move it that way. [Jessica's last song] wasn't the best. It didn't show off her voice as we've heard. But for Phillip, he didn't care and he's been vulnerable, I think America loves that. He just don't care and that's beautiful. I said I thought he'd win only because he's so vulnerable and also I think he's going to be a big movie star. I look at his face and I see James Dean."

As for Phillips? He's pretty pumped — and shocked.

"I don't really feel anything," Phillip told E!. "Its crazy I'm still a little numb from the whole situation it's just so unreal. Did I think I was gonna win? Heck no. It's so unreal. It hasn't sunk in yet. It's such a blessing to have, I'm kinda ready to try and comprehend it all. After I won, I wasn't thinking about anything. I wasn't thinking about the song, I wasn't wanting to sing or anything. I just started thinking about the journey and how far all of us have come and how far we made it, it's so overwhelming. Jessica has a huge future ahead of her and we're both supportive of each other. I love playing music and I'm just a lucky guy."

The finale — though not surprising — did bring one huge surprise: Season five finalist Ace Young managed to steal the show by proposing to another Idol alum, season three runner-up Diana DeGarmo — and it was adorable.

Jessica Sanchez talks about Phillip Phillips:

"This has always been home to us and I felt this was the perfect place to ask a simple question," he told Seacrest before turning to his girlfriend. "Diana, we have conquered Broadway together; we have created all your new music together."

In great Idol brand promotion tradition, Young managed to get a product placement in during the proposal.

"We have an amazing group of people around us, and, with the help of David Webb Jewelry, I have a way to make this fun last forever," Young said as he got down on one knee. "I love you to death. You're my best friend. I want to make this last forever and I will do anything in my power to have the most... amazing life together if you will have me. Diana Nicole DeGarmo, will you marry me?"

She tearfully nodded yes.

"I'm so speechless right now! Wow, babe! You picked a good one! And my makeup's runnin' right now," she replied, prompting the same reaction from Seacrest, "Mine too after that."

Very cute!

Congratulations to Phillip Phillips on his American Idol win!

I had him picked from his audition and didn't miss a single week. Yes the right person won. He always gave it his all even though he wasn't feeling that great most of the time.He really connected with the audience. What a nice young man and so humble! I'm so very happy for him and I can't wait to buy his music. Wish him all the very best!

Oh my goodness. Did anyone else not think that Ace's proposal was the most awkward, painful thing to watch?! His dramatic pauses were after every word! He kind of creeps me out to even begin with. And the plug for the designer was inappropriately placed. I would want a re-do if he was actually the person I was going to marry.

The right person definitely won! Phillip Phillips is truly talented and has a strong future ahead of him. He isn't too hard to look at either! But he did connect to the audience the best and was the most likable, which helps even more than his music.
