Of his cancer diagnosis Adam Yauch went on to explain, "I actually have a form of cancer in the gland… and it's also in a lymph node in that area."

I have been a Beastie Boys fan for 25 years. I was shocked and saddened by the news of Adam Yauk's untimely death. I was aware that the singer had throat cancer, however, I was under the impression that he had recently beaten it. The artist who taught us that we have to fight for our right to party went on to achieve many great things in the realms of pop culture and political activism. It is sad that one of the most recognizable voices in hip hop has been forever silenced.

MCA achieved many great things in his quarter-century career as a Beastie Boy. He started out as a raucous "girly"-chasing party animal and matured into a conscientious political activist. Given his left-wing stance on many issues and his renunciation of his former misogynism on 1994's Ill Communications, I was surprised to hear this line on one of his last tracks: "Give me a scalpel I'll make an incision, I'll cut out of the part of your brain that does the b--chin' / Put it in formaldehyde and put it on the shelf, so you can show it to people and say 'that's a part of my old self.'"
