Everyone knows a group of girls like this one… there’s the worldly one, the pretty one, the know-it-all and of course, the new girl.
In Damsels in Distress we watch as these four unique young women search to find themselves on a male-dominated and, sometimes depressing, college campus.
“I’ve always loved very opinionated, talkative, funny, dominant female characters,” said the film's director Whit Stillman.
And the four women behind the characters are just as interesting as their on-screen personas, which we learned when we sat down with them recently to chat about the film.
Greta plays the leader of the pack, Violet, with a fierce sense of self and style. She runs the campus depression prevention center and has a very interesting approach to wellness: tap dance!
But Violet’s method of recovery doesn't seem absurd to Gerwig. When questioned what she does in real life to boost her spirits, Greta told SheKnows, “I really do dance. I go to the dance studio and it makes me happy.”
You may recognize Gerwig from her role in Arthur with Russell Brand. You can also catch her in two more movies coming to theaters soon, Love Versus and To Rome with Love.
As the new girl on campus, Tipton’s character Lily has a lot to learn from her classmates… or so Violet thinks. After a few encounters with some local boys, though, it appears Lily isn’t the only one who has some growing up to do in the romance department.
Tipton is a lot like her blossoming character, having recently exploded on the Hollywood scene after her appearance in Crazy, Stupid, Love.
She told SheKnows that unlike Lily, she never went to college, so living in Los Angeles right now is a major learning experience for her.
You can catch the model turned actress in next summer’s zombie love story, Warm Bodies.
With a British accent and her scolding, motherly tone, Megalyn’s character Rose is the voice of reason in the group, always letting her friends know exactly what is on her mind.
But Megalyn’s personality is far from the wound-up Rose. The actress told SheKnows that in real life she’s very extroverted and loves a good laugh.
“It was one of the funniest scripts I’ve read in a long time,” said Megalyn.
She shared that her next role may be on a new futuristic television show, but that her true dream would be to try theater.
The true newcomer of the group is 25-year-old Carrie, playing the “sexy,” but naive, Heather.
With her delicate looks and soft-spoken Southern charm, Carrie appeared to be a no-brainer choice for the girl-next-door beauty.
Though she only has few television appearances under her belt, Carrie did a fantastic job in her first starring role in Damsels.
“It’s so clever, and unique and funny,” said Carrie of the film.
It certainly is! Catch these four talented women in Damsels in Distress in select theaters on April 6.
