Diva's new lady lawyer

Serena Williams is taking a break from tennis to moonlight as a lawyer. She'll guest star on an upcoming episode of the hit series, Drop Dead Diva. Williams will fight for justice as an attorney specializing in family law.

Serena Williams Tennis pro Serena Williams is heading to a different kind of court. The athlete-turned-actress will play a legal eagle on Lifetime's Drop Dead Diva.

Diva creator and executive producer Josh Berman says the guest role is tailor made for Williams.

“I had heard that Serena was a fan of the show, so I reached out to her directly," he said. "The writers developed this part specifically for her. I can’t wait to watch Serena serve it up on our set.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Williams will play Kelly Stevens, the legal counsel hired to represent Elisa Shayne (Brandy Norwood). Elisa is embroiled in a bitter custody battle with Jay Parker (Josh Stamberg), one of the managing partners of the firm Harrison and Parker.

Last season, Parker discovered Elisa was the mother of a young boy, who turned out to be his son! After a brief confrontation, Elisa quickly left town with their child in tow. It sounds like the pair eventually reunites but not on good terms. It's bad for them, but great drama for fans of the show.

Drop Dead Diva isn't the first television gig for Ms. Williams. She previously appeared on My Wife and Kids, The Division, ER and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The hit dramedy is currently in its fourth season and rounding up a slew of familiar guest stars. Aside from Brandy and Serena, Kim Kardashian will also appear on the show.
