Heidi Klum and Seal hit us with a ton of bricks when they announced their separation Sunday after nearly seven years of marriage.
"While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate," they said in a joint statement.
"We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition."
No word on the real reason for the split, but TMZ cites sources that claim Klum got tired of the British singer's "volcanic" temper.
A split between the two superstars seemed impossible — they always looked so in love and renewed their wedding vows each year. However, they're hardly the only celebrity couple to floor us with their split.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
Our view of Arnold Schwarzenegger was forever tainted when the news emerged that he fathered a child with his housekeeper.
"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife [Maria Shriver] about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," The Terminator star said in July 2011. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused."
Shriver filed for divorce soon after learning of her husband's 14-year-old love child, though they were rumored to be reconciling around the holidays.
We're not holding our breath for that reunion, though.
Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard
New Girl star Zooey Deschanel and her indie rock husband Ben Gibbard surprised fans when they announced their separation on Halloween 2011.
"It was mutual and amicable," a source told US Weekly of their split. "There was no third party involved."
Deschanel later filed for divorce on Dec. 27, citing the usual "irreconcilable differences." The real surprise: Her financial health. The quirky actress is actually very frugal, spending less than half of her $95,000-a-month take home pay. She also has a healthy stock portfolio worth upwards of two million dollars. Any boys want a piece of that action? We thought so.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
Jennifer Lopez's willingness to walk down the aisle with any guy who gave her a glance became a running punching during the late '90s and early 2000s. However, we all thought that had changed when she married fellow Puerto Rican singer Marc Anthony in 2005. The couple managed to keep gossipmongers at bay over the years, though that all changed in 2011. In May, rumors emerged that Anthony was getting a little too friendly with his HawthoRNe co-star Jada Pinkett-Smith. However, the couple's split in July 2011 wasn't blamed on that.
"We have decided to end our marriage," the couple told People in a statement. "This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters."
"It is a painful time for all involved," the statement continued. "And we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time."
The real reason for the split? Some sources claimed it was because of Anthony's controlling ways. They've seemed to get over their differences and remain friendly to parent their twins, Max and Emme.
Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis
Let's get this out of the way right now: Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis haven't officially split.
However, People dedicated a cover story to the couple's "sad, separate" lives living on different continents. We were completely surprised when this news came out, especially after Depp's gushing description of his love-at-first-sight girl.
"I saw that back and that neck, and then she turned around and I saw those eyes — and boom! My life as a single man was done," he told the U.K. Daily Mail last year.
Let's hope it's just a rough patch.
Katy Perry and Russell Brand
We'll admit it: We thought the odd pairing between Katy Perry and Russell Brand was just odd enough to last.
Not so. Brand filed for divorce from the "I Kissed a Girl" singer on Dec. 30, citing irreconcilable differences. The reason? Sources say Brand was ready to have kids, while Perry just wanted to party.
However, Perry might be trying to woo her husband back.
"Katy wants a reconciliation. She has told Russell she is willing to do anything to make the marriage work," a source told the U.K.'s Mail on Sunday.
