Denver, Colorado native Mondo Guerra was one of the standout designers on season eight of Project Runway. In what was quite possibly the most controversial finale ever, Guerra lost to Gretchen Jones during New York Fashion Week. Now, he's back on Project Runway All Stars to claim the title many think he was robbed of.
During his time on Project Runway, Guerra was a judge favorite and shocked everyone with his revelation that he is HIV positive during one of the challenges.
The HP Pattern Challenge required the designers to create a fabric pattern using HP tablets and then incorporate the fabric into their look. Guerra opted for a bright, bold pattern comprised of plus signs that represented his HIV positive status.
During judging, the designers were asked to explain the patterns they had created, which was when Guerra revealed he had been keeping his status a secret for nearly 10 years.
Since appearing on Project Runway, Guerra has launched his own line of jewelry and has become extremely involved with several charitable organizations. He leveraged his Project Runway success in order to increase AIDS awareness back in 2010 when he created a limited edition t-shirt to commemorate World AIDS Day. Proceeds from the shirts benefited amfAR, an organization dedicated to AIDS research. He also gained a celebrity fan in Heidi Klum, who wore one of his creations to the premiere of Black Swan shortly after the finale of his season aired.
With his incredible talent and an eye for color, it is no surprise that Guerra is competing on Project Runway All Stars. The judges most likely expect great things from the young designer, and if his past season is any indication, Guerra will deliver. Will he finally be the last designer standing this season?
