Battle Over Babies Killed Romance

A battle over babies turned Russell Brand and Katy Perry into bickering exes. The comedian and the pop star called time on their 14-month marriage after the hit-maker refused to get pregnant, new reports have suggested.

Katy Perry had arguably the best year of her career in 2011: Grammy nods, AMA wins and even the distinction of being voted MTV's very first Artist of the Year.

The "Teenage Dream" singer reportedly isn't willing to swap such accolades for a quiet life as a Hollywood housewife -- a decision spywitnesses say cost the star her marriage to comic Russell Brand.

On Friday, Russell officially filed for divorce from Perry after just over a year of marriage.

At the heart of the trouble? Katy's flat out refusal to become pregnant.

The shaggy-haired comedian, a former heroin addict, is said to be desperate to become a father, but the pop star chose to put fame and fortune before starting a family.

Russell, 36, intended to leave the party scene in order to have a child with the "California Gurls" singer. Katy, on the other hand, rejected the idea of becoming a Hollywood housewife, fearing a pregnancy may put an end to her blossoming music career.

The couple realized they were heading in different directions when Russell outlined his plans to have kids with Katy, only to find she did not share his ambition, insiders dish.

"He wanted her to stay at home, do the whole Hollywood housewives thing. But that was never going to happen for Katy, she loves her singing career," a tattle told Britain's Sunday Mirror this week.

Russell made it no secret that he wanted to have children with Perry.

"I would like one. I love those little babies in the beginning," he said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last month.

Katy's jokingly declared her love of booze as the reason for the delayed baby plans.

A source close to the soon-to-be exes says Katy gave her wedding ring back to Russell a week before Christmas in the aftermath of the baby bust-up. It marked the end of 14 months of marriage and six months of arguments for the former couple.

The estranged pair celebrated the Christmas holiday separately. Perry was photographed frolicking on the beach in Hawaii. Brand spent the holiday in England. Neither wore their wedding rings.

Russell and Katy got engaged just a few months after meeting at MTV's 2009 Video Music Awards. They wed in India in October 2010.
