You know what's really not funny to people with eating disorders? Jokes about eating disorders. Demi Lovato let Disney know that in a Twitter rant after her former employer let air a tasteless joke about anorexia on one of their hit shows.
What started the furor? A throwaway line on Shake It Up, in which one skinny character quipped, "I could just eat you up, well if I ate."
Lovato was not having it.
"I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress' from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease..... #nice," she wrote on Twitter.
Then Lovato started to internet yell at the company that made her a teen millionaire, "And is it just me or are the actress' [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN and LIZZIE MCGUIRE. Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT."
And PS? "I've gained weight. Get over it. That's what happens when you get out of treatment for AN EATING DISORDER," she fumed.
At least someone in Disney PR had the good sense to listen to the girl. A company rep later tweeted, "We hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them… It's NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!"
Demi Lovato entered rehab in 2010 for what were then described as "physical and emotional issues." The singer/actress later revealed she suffered from a host of problems, including bipolar disorder two, self-mutilation and an eating disorder. She never confirmed her rumored drug addiction.
