We weren't surprised when Kim Kardashian ended her blink-and-you'll-miss-it marriage to Kris Humphries after 72 days. However, we were floored when New Girl star Zooey Deschanel filed for legal separation from her husband, Benjamin Gibbard.
"It was mutual and amicable," a source told US Weekly of their split. "There was no third party involved."
Deschanel met the Death Cab for Cutie frontman Gibbard through their mutual manager three years ago. "I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me," Gibbard said. "I'd seen her movies and obviously I thought she was very beautiful."
They married in Seattle in September 2009, though Deschanel remained in Los Angeles for her various acting projects and Gibbard went on the road with Death Cab. Deschanel admitted living separate lives was hard.
"He's really good at calling. He's probably better than I am. He's a very conscientious person," Deschanel told iVillage after their wedding. "You can't expect to make no effort. You still have to make the effort and be kind and understanding. It sort of just solidifies your commitment."
Neither have spoken publicly about the divorce, though we suspect it does have something to do with being apart so much – Deschanel's New Girl has been picked up for the whole season, while Gibbard's Death Cab for Cutie just released their seventh album, Codes and Keys.
We'd love to get the inside story, but Gibbard told Spinner that the notoriously private couple knew how to keep prying eyes out of their relationship.
"If you're looking for attention, there are places in town where you can go and get attention," he told the website in May. "We've just kind of learned that we don't go to the Grove when we need to go to the Apple store. We don't go to Beverly Hills to get coffee."
We're hoping this separation turns into a reconciliation!
