The real reason behind Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn's split? Scarlett came on too strong, and Sean fled the scene.

The real reason behind the breakup of Scarlett Johansson, 26, and Sean Penn, 50, suggests it was Penn who did the dumping after Johansson got way too clingy.

Supposedly, Penn, who divorced Robin Wright last year, wasn't looking to get into anything too "serious" and "did not want to be tied down." Johansson, who recently split from Ryan Reynolds, was looking to get close fast. That became a problem.

From the get-go, Johansson pursued Penn and continued to do so as long as they were a couple. At the Spike Guys Choice Awards, Johansson trailed Penn and "pushed herself into his conversations," a source said. "She sat down between him and Robert De Niro. Robert was like 'What?' and made a face."

While Penn is notoriously press shy, Johansson seemed eager to spread photos of the two together.

"A photographer asked for a shot," said the source. "Before Sean could say no, she said yes."

The actors were spotted earlier this year at the White House Correspondents Dinner, from which they left hand-in-hand. They also spent time together in Cabo San Lucas. In Los Angeles, they had lunch together with Johansson's legs on Penn's lap.

Sure, there are plenty of men who would be happy to have Scarlett cling to them, but Penn wasn't one of them.

Were ScarJo and Sean a couple doomed from the start?
