Oprah Interviews James Frey

James Frey told Oprah Winfrey he has no respect for the memoir genre.

James Frey

James Frey rose to fame when Oprah Winfrey chose his memoir as a book club selection -- but she changed into a bitter critic when his book A Million Little Pieces turned out to be nothing more than a million little lies.

Now Oprah has revisited the author to find out how his life -- and attitude -- have changed since his very public humiliation. The verdict: Not much.

Frey is still rather unrepentant over what he did, and frankly thinks every memoirist does the exact same thing -- they just don't get caught.

"I don't have a whole lot of respect for the genre. I think most writers of memoirs, and this is a very unpopular statement, do what I did," Frey said on Monday's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Oprah does not look amused. Watch a clip here:

I watched the original Oprah show when James' mother was in the audience when Oprah announced "A Million Little Pieces" was on her "must-read" list. The subsequent show where James was severely chastised was awful to watch... Oprah was brutal and vicious in her attack. But, because I love Oprah so much, I didn't read any of his books... Then I caught Parts I & II on May 16th & 17 (today) and I wish I had a fraction of James Frey's strength... When he held out his arms to hug Oprah, the tears spilled. Frankly, I don't know what the big deal was from the beginning... He categorized his book incorrectly. SO WHAT. He didn't snuff out someones life.... I plan to read everything that James Frey has published and will publish in future. James, you are one classy man and your smiles with your writers and at the end of the interview were heartwarming.
