John Dye's sudden death

Touched by an Angel star John Dye, who ironically played the angel of death on the hit series, was found dead in his home on Monday.

John Dye and cast of Touch by an AngelTouched by an Angel star John Dye was found dead at the age of 47 in his San Francisco home. The medical examiner said his cause of death has not been determined, however, relatives say he died of heart failure.

This chronic condition, also known as congestive heart failure, affects the heart's ability to pump blood throughout the body, resulting in fluid buildup in the lungs and other organs. This condition can come on suddenly or develop after a heart attack. No word if Dye was being treated for the condition.

RadarOnline is reporting that an autopsy was performed on Tuesday but toxicology tests won't be back for three to four weeks.

Besides his hit role as the angel of death in Touched by an Angel for nine seasons beginning in 1994, he also appeared in the martial arts movie The Best of the Best and Murder, She Wrote.

Valerie Bertinelli, who co-starred with him in Touched by an Angel, tweeted her condolences on Thursday, writing, "Dear, sweet John Dye, rest in peace."

Kathy Ireland also tweeted kind thoughts to her friend, writing, "My friend, John Dye, of Touched by an Angel passed. I loved John. His smile, kindness, gentle heart & talent. Heartbreaking. Goodbye Angel."
