Long before Twilight took on the love triangle between Edward, Bella and Jacob, Buffy the Vampire Slayer ruled the vampire world. Joss Whedon's campy 1992 film with Kristy Swanson in the title role spawned a seven-season supernatural TV phenomenon starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and then the David Boreanaz spin-off, Angel.
Now, a new big screen Buffy Summers movie is in the works and while the tale will embrace the energy of the original, this will be a whole new story written for an entirely new era.
Sci-fi superstar Joss Whedon, who created the character and is off working on Marvel's The Avengers, is not on board to return to his roots.
Instead, 29-year-old Buffy series fangirl Whit Anderson will bring Buffy Summers into the new millennium. Considering her allegiance to the TV series, the reboot will likely lean more to the deep storytelling of the WB-UPN show than the campy fun of the big screen original, which also starred Luke Perry.
The script is in the works, but the idea is set and it's so good, it caught the interest of producer Charles Roven, who was behind the Batman reboots Dark Knight and Batman Begins. Atlas' Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the film alongside Vertigo Entertainment's Doug Davison and Roy Lee (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed).
"Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy," Roven said. "There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return to the big screen. We're thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she'll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."
Does that mean we're going to see Buffy all grown up? Or at least at college age? We'll have to wait and see. Word is Roven wants to see the film land by 2012, if not sooner.
The big news has many murmuring over who will be cast as the new Buffy, while Whedon fans are likely aching to hear how the sci-fi guru feels about the whole thing.
