After Cristina's (Sandra Oh) mid-operation freak-out on last week's Grey's Anatomy, some of the top docs at Seattle Grace want to move her out of surgery and into a less stressful rotation.
Derek (Patrick Dempsey) takes a stand, insisting that if they don't put the traumatized surgeon on his service, she'll leave the program and that if Cristina leaves, he leaves. He wins the argument, but Cristina can't even sleep alone yet, so it's hard to imagine he and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will be able to get her back into the OR.
Derek also has his own trauma to process this week on Grey's Anatomy. Derek's been avoiding his sister Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) calls since the shoot-out, so over on Private Practice, his ex Addison bought Amelia a ticket and sent her to Seattle for some face time.
Amelia arrives with a peace offering, in the form of a patient with a brain tumor. She's also carting a whole lot of sibling baggage. She manages to get privileges to wear hospital scrubs, but Derek resists letting her near his ER or back into his life.
The visit will uncover much about Derek and Amelia's volatile past and it all starts with a traumatic incident involving their father's death.
Meanwhile, Seattle Grace's visiting trauma shrink (James Tupper) is ready to pack up and move onto the next crisis. That doesn't sit well with Teddy (Kim Raver), who's become attached to the charming visiting hunk.
Last week's previews from ABC got ahead of themselves. It turns out this is the week the Chief (James Pickens, Jr.) tries to get Alex (Justin Chambers) to face his elevator fears.
On a lighter note, Mer, Cristina, Alex Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) reminisce about their first times. When one of their stories sounds a bit too farfetched, the others determine there's a virgin among them.
It doesn't sound like this week's crossover will go back to Private Practice. Amelia is back on the West Coast at 10 p.m. and asking for a job at Oceanside, but it's a whole new set of stories.
In an episode called Playing God, the drunk driver who killed Dell (Chris Lowell) and almost killed Maya (Zoey Deutch) in last season's Private Practice finale shows up at Oceanside Wellness with a heart condition, forcing Sam (Taye Diggs) and Naomi (Audra McDonald) to grapple with their anger and their medical responsibility.
Meanwhile, Peter (Tim Daly) ignores wife Violet's (Amy Brenneman) advice and puts a patient's life at risk, Coop (Paul Adelstein) and Charlotte (KaDee Strickland) quarrel over buying a new home and folks are less than pleased as news of Addison and Sam's romance spreads.
Grey's Anatomy airs tonight at 9 p.m. on ABC, followed by Private Practice at 10 p.m.
