Most actors dream of nabbing a role in one hit franchise, but Robert Pattinson already landed two before his 23rd birthday. From Harry Potter to Twilight, the young actor has cemented his place in film history and guaranteed himself a spot both in front of and behind the camera for decades to come.
Robert Pattinson spent his early years as a typical British school boy in the London suburbs until he was bitten by the theater bug. Roles in amateur productions of Guys and Dolls, Our Town, Macbeth and Tess of the D'Ubervilles gained the notice of a casting agent, who got the ball rolling on RPat's career.
He began modeling when he was 12 and quickly parlayed that into a TV and film career. British made-for-TV movies quickly led him to the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, for which he was named the British Star of Tomorrow by The Times.
Little did they know how right they were. In 2008, Robert Pattinson became the subject of teen girls' fantasies with the release of Twilight. Although the casting of Pattinson as leading man Edward Cullen was initially met with skepticism by fans, they quickly warmed up to his charismatic onscreen presence and intense chemistry with Kristen Stewart as Bella.
That chemistry is rumored to be just as real off screen as on. Murmurs that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were a couple swelled to a dull roar as soon as the first Twilight film was released and haven't let up since. Neither has directly addressed their relationship with the press, although wily photographers have managed to snap a few shots of the pair holding hands and appearing to kiss on rare occasion.
While the Twilight franchise is keeping Robert Pattinson busy -- he has appeared in every film so far, including Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse and is contracted through the two final Breaking Dawn flicks -- the actor is avoiding being typecast in teen idol-type roles by taking on critically serious films. He plays artist Salvador Dali in 2009's Little Ashes and both played in and executive produced 2010's Remember Me. In 2011, look for Pattinson in Bel Ami with Uma Thurman and Water for Elephants with Reese Witherspoon.
So fans, never fear: Sounds like the career of Robert Pattinson has a shelf life far past the end of The Twilight Saga.
