Maggie Stiefvater's Linger

We've got the scoop on Linger, the highly-anticipated sequel to Shiver, a book about werewolves from Maggie Stiefvater. How did this incredibly talented author become fascinated with werewolves and how did she make them so darn sexy?

We chatted with Stiefvater about this and more!

Maggie Dishes

SheKnows: What got you interested in writing about werewolves?

Maggie Stiefvater: Like all things that change your life permanently, it was an accident, really. I have always been incredibly, terribly, horribly in love with homicidal faries and British farie lore, so I just figured that I would end up writing about them for the rest of my life. It's what my first two novels are about, after all. But while working on finding short story contests to publicize my debut novel, I found one on werewolves. I thought, "Well, werewolves are pretty unsexy, what with the slobbering and shedding thing, but I could manage them for 2,000 words." It coincided with a desire to write a bittersweet novel for young adults, and suddenly, I had a werewolf novel that made people cry.

SheKnows: You are an artist, musician, a writer and a mom, which of these do you find to be the most challenging? Most enjoyable?

Maggie Stiefvater: Oh, the mom part is definitely the most challenging. Everything else is just my way of processing the world. Being a mom requires making sandwiches and that doesn't always come naturally. But I wouldn't give it up for all the sandwiches or tunes in the world. Writing is the most natural thing for me -- in that I have always done it and even if I didn't get a paycheck for it, I'd still write. Art is sort of a by-product of breathing. But music is challenging and rewarding and enjoyable and always shifting.
