Don’T Be Afraid, Katie Holmes
The teaser trailer for Katie Holmes’ new film, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro, hit the internet today and after just one viewing, we’re gonna need a nightlight before we go beddie bye this eve.
"You're sitting there, in the dark," a creepy echoing voice begins over a black screen. "But don't worry, there's nothing to be afraid of."
We were jumping watching the trailer in our bright, light living room, so just imagine experiencing it in an inky theater. Get ready to squeal, spill your popcorn and grab the arm of whoever is sitting next to you, even if they're a total stranger.
Rated R for "violence and terror," Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, co-written by Matthew Robbins (who was responsible for two of our childhood favorites, *batteries not included and Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and directed by Troy Nixey, is a remake of the 1973 made-for-TV horror film of the same name. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is about a young girl (Bailee Madison) who moves in with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) only to discover that her new home sweet home is crawling with tiny little monsters -- none of them named Tom Cruise.
The film is set for release on January 21, 2011, and already caused quite the raucous at Comic-Con where the filmmakers debuted the first footage. With this new trailer, you can expect the hype to grow even more.
In films such as Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy, and The Devil's Backbone, Guillermo del Toro has proven himself as a master of creating dazzling spectacles which blend horror and beauty. His touch guarantees this will be a film glorious to behold, even if you watch half of it from under your seat or through your fingers.
Meanwhile, Holmes may be in for her first hit since Batman Begins. Poor Katie hasn't had much good press since Tom jumped the couch, but Don't Be Afraid of the Dark could mark her return to the kind of glory she once enjoyed in her Joey Potter days.
The fact that we're gonna think twice before we crawl under the covers tonight after watching a teaser trailer that's less than two minutes long bodes well for what's in store for audiences come January.
