McCarthy and Carrey kept their relationship a secret when they first paired up, but came out as a couple back in 2006. By the time they moved in together two years ago, they were a bona fide Hollywood family, albeit with no plans to marry.
With divorce dramas behind them, the two hedged when asked about getting married, while sharing the spotlight and embracing each other's children.
Carrey stepped in as pseudo step pappy to McCarthy's son Evan, 6, who is autistic, and became involved in McCarthy's controversial crusade against vaccinations. Their efforts even landed them in Time Magazine this February. That same month, McCarthy gladly accepted the title "grandma" when Carey's daughter Jane, 22, had a baby.
In addition to their family and activism, the couple shared a knack for dolling out over the top funny. Carrey's next gig as Curly in the upcoming Three Stooges should bring more of that fun, while McCarthy proved she can keep with his infamous faces, gaffs and pratfalls in her 2005 flick Dirty Love, which she both wrote and starred in.
After five years the romance is over. Many are speculating over brought about the split, while the duo seems intent on keeping things friendly. "Jenny and I have just ended our 5yr relationship," Carrey Tweeted Tuesday, April 6. "I'm grateful 4 the many blessings we've shared and I wish her the very best! S'okay!?"
At the same time, McCarthy posted a message to her feed, saying "Im so grateful for the years Jim and I had together. I will stay committed to Jane and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart."
SheKnows congratulates the Hollywood couple for keeping the breakup copacetic. Now that the media is shining a light on it, we also wish them the best of luck in their efforts to keep it that way.
