Alice's Sisterly Dish
Alice in Wonderland, at its heart, is the tale of two sisters. In Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the central sisters are The Red Queen and The White Queen as played by Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter.
Oscar nominees Hathaway and Carter sat down with SheKnows in an exclusive TV interview to dish all things Alice, how their sisterhood is different as played by Hathaway and Carter, as well as a little conversation about Shakespeare between to the two that truly sheds a light into the world of the highly talented movie actress.
Both Carter and Hathaway were so inspired by Alice in Wonderland's author Lewis Carroll and his timeless work that they took the sisterhood of Wonderland Queens and tossed it on its' head.
Hathaway steered towards exploring the darker side of The White Queen because after all, she and The Red Queen are family and the apples hardly ever fall far from the tree.
In Burton's Alice in Wonderland, Carter's Red Queen rules the Underworld as a tyrannical monarch who has banished her White Queen sibling from her rightful throne. Caught in the middle are Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska's Alice, Michael Sheen's White Rabbit and Matt Lucas' Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
The Red Queen is only the latest terrific character she's inhabited for Burton including unforgettable turns from Planet of the Apes to Sweeney Todd. The English actress has also found her way into Harry Potter lore as Bellatrix Lestrange. Carter's acting resume is one long list of unforgettable characters including scene stealing roles in A Room with a View, Wings of a Dove, Howard's End and Fight Club.
Hathaway earned her Oscar nomination for the searing sister portrayal of a troubled sibling coming home for her sister's wedding in Rachel Getting Married. After wowing audiences with her royal pedigree on The Princess Diaries' films and Ella Enchanted, Hathaway busted through to A-list Hollywood actress with her perfect performances in The Devil Wears Prada, Becoming Jane and Brokeback Mountain.
The Alice in Wonderland sisters finished a little late lunch after a long day of filming and shared exclusive insight into what Alice in Wonderland means to them.
