Scorsese & DiCaprio's Creepy Hit
Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio pairing up for their fourth movie, Shutter Island, wins big at the weekend box office.
The film was originally slated to hit the big screen back in October, but Paramount held back the release, hoping a quieter weekend would mean bigger numbers. It worked! As the only new major release this weekend, Shutter Island not only reined over the other films in theaters with $40.2 million, but also beat out past DiCaprio and Scorsese collaborations like The Departed, which debuted at $26.9 million in 2006. Star-studded Valentine's Day dropped to second, while bringing in $17.2 million. With a cast that includes the likes of Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Kutcher and Bradley Cooper, the Garry Marshall romantic comedy has made a total of $87.4 million, so far. After two months of raking in the money, James Cameron's Avatar still refuses to budge from the top five. In fact, this weekend it climbed back up to third, after coming in fourth last weekend. The sci-fi romantic adventure brought in an impressive $16.1 million this weekend, bumping its US total take to $687.8 million and its worldwide take to $2.47 billion. This is going to be one tough record breaker to beat. Family-friendly Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief fell to fourth, with $15,300,000, followed by The Wolfman, which brought in $9,846,265 in its second week. Dear John, which started with a big win in its first week, was bumped out of the top five in its third weekend, making $7.3 million. The Tooth Fairy drops to seven, but made 4.5 million, which was about the same as last week's take.
From Paris with Love and Edge of Darkness round out the top ten, bringing in $2.5 million and $2.2 million, respectively. Weekend box office1. Shutter Island: $40,200,000, $40,200,000 total
