The tone of Pattinson's Details interview portrays the 23-year-old British hunk as a deep but odd thinker intent on making serious art and making something of himself. While downing beers with a Details scribe, he opens up about the whirlwind of success, downplays his hunk status and shares his desire to get into politics.
Of course, it's the strange comments he makes about women and porn that have everyone talking -- and comparing him to John Mayer.
The biggest quote making the rounds came in Pattinson's discussion of the Detail's photo spread, which has him posing seductively with a bevy of naked and half-naked ladies.
"I really hate vaginas. I'm allergic to vaginas," Pattinson said. "But I can't say I had no idea, because it was a 12-hour shoot, so you kind of get the picture that these women are going to stay naked after, like, five or six hours...Thank God I was hungover."
Pattinson was likely making light of spending an afternoon with naked ladies, but even in context, it's strange and makes one wonder about his sexual orientation. Then, he follows that vagina comment by likening the vibe of the shoot to "80s nakedness."
"If you look at porn in, like, the eighties, there was something kind of quaint about it, quite sweet -- like this little naked community," Pattinson told Details. "The people who made it liked it, they had respect for it. Not remotely like the porn that's available now. No community in it at all. It's just everything, everywhere."
During a side conversation about his father, his uncles and a steel mill in the Yorkshire, Pattinson also puts the kibosh on any speculations about an off-screen romance with Kristen Stewart or any other woman.
"The only emotional connection of relevance is with my dog," he admitted. "My relationship with my dog, it's ridiculous."
As if there weren't going to be Mayer comparisons already, the interviewer inspired one confusing tidbit that holds as much potential to offend as Mayer's recent use of the N-word.
Rob, did you know that every time you say actor or acting you lower your voice to a whisper?
He's genuinely startled. "I do?"
Yes, so quietly it's like you're saying Negro.
He laughs, lightens up. "What if we were 'acting' like Negroes? Then we'd be [expletive] -- we couldn't hear anything..."
