Kate Winslet wins lawsuit against Daily Mail

The Academy Award-winner won more than $40,000 in damages when she won a lawsuit against the UK's Daily Mail for a story they reported which erroneously indicated she lied about her workout routine. She will donate her winnings to charity but the real truth of the story is about the issue surrounding diet, exercise and how women should accept themselves for who they are.

Here's the deal: the article, Should Kate Winslet Win an Oscar for the World's Most Irritating Actress, was published last January. They also published nude pictures of the actress next to the story. While Winslet was not present in court for the actual verdict, her representative at the time indicated the article offended Ms Winslet and also created "a great deal of distress."

The statement indicated the stress was not only due to the false story but also left people with the wrong impression on her views of the female body.

After the verdict she stated, "I am delighted that the Mail have apologized for making false allegations about me. I was particularly upset to be accused of lying about my exercise regime and felt that I had a responsibility to request an apology in order to demonstrate my commitment to the views that I have always expressed about body issues including diet and exercise."

Winslet added that she strongly believes that women should be encouraged to accept themselves as they are so "to suggest that I was lying was an unacceptable accusation of hypocrisy."
