Adam Lambert + DWTS: What?

The favorites in this year's biggest reality series both lost. American Idol crowned Kris Allen its champion while Shawn Johnson took the Dancing with the Stars title.

An Idol surprise

Idol upsets

Kris Allen is a fantastic singer and proved his mettle on the final two shows of American Idol, but especially in its final weeks. Adam Lambert was the favorite from early on, and through everyone we spoke with, seemed a lock to win.

Obviously we know what happened. The confetti and white sparkling lights fell on Kris singing No Boundaries and not Adam. It immediately makes us think about Dancing with the Stars and its finale that had a similar outcome.

Gilles and Cheryl were the odds-on favorite to hoist the Mirror Ball Trophy for Dancing with the Stars. Instead, it was Shawn and Mark's names that were read as winning the 2009 season.

Two of America's biggest shows and both end the same way -- it begs a question.

How did this happen?

Idol musings

Has American Idol heard a voice like Lambert's prior to his gracing the American Idol stage? No.

As far as Dancing with the Stars goes, Gilles and Cheryl were by far the best couple and they too finished as the also-ran.

The Adam Lambert in the Dancing with the Stars equation is Gilles. Both were robbed!

Allen and Johnson were both excelling at the right time and both had the teenage girl vote, which is never to be underestimated — just ask The Jonas Brothers, the movies Titanic and Twilight.

Kris Allen is your American Idol

Yet the outcome is still puzzling.

Idol final faults

When Lambert sang with Kiss, it seemed to all make sense. Yes, Keith Urban is fabulous, but his pairing with Kris Allen seemed ill-timed even if both singers pulled off the feat.

Lambert, on the other hand, emerging singing the Kiss classic Beth allowed audiences to have their light bulbs go off. "He's performing with Kiss!" There have been few performances on the LA Live stage that got a crowd into a frenzy as the Kiss and Adam Lambert jam of Rock n' Roll All Night accomplished. Showman is clearly too calm of a word to describe Adam's talents. It is, and always will be, difficult to upstage Kiss. Lambert succeeded on that front!

Adam Lambert and Kiss rock American Idol

So where did it go wrong for the Lambert fans?

The answer is the same place Gilles and Cheryl fans are seeking answers from their Dancing with the Stars upset.

Dancing dumbfounds

With Gilles and Cheryl leading the pack, Dancing with the Stars had itself an upset that was self-created.

By having Gilles achieve such high scores as the competition began, the bar of expectations was so high, he had nowhere to go but down. For him to come back to the final after dipping out of first place was an accomplishment, but it also gave him the favorite title -- a moniker that was deserved.

How did Shawn Johnson's name become the one read as the champion of Dancing with the Stars? Simple, it was close. Apparently it was within one-percentage point between the two dancing couples. That may be, but Gilles was a much better dancer than Shawn and should have won in a landslide.

Sure there's the Olympic medalist vote that will always put an Olympian at the top of the Dancing with the Stars leader-board. But, in this situation, it simply came down to a choice that was so close — either result was possible.

It does not make it any less of a shock.

American Idol on the other hand, where Dancing with the Stars was petty theft, Kris Allen winning Idol was grand larceny.

My gawd, everywhere I go there you are spewing your venom towards a guy who didn't do anything but try his best and succeed at winning the title. If you wanted Adam to win so badly, you should have thrown your own AT&T party and showed ppl how to powertext. You show your own narrow-mindedness into thinking that a small state like Arkansas could sway the votes in Kris's favor. I hope you don't watch the show next year because it could do with less fans like your sore loser bitterbert @$$.

Ugh, I hate this media favoritism. I think Kris and Adam were equally deserving; both appeal to completely different niches in pop music, and Kris's appeal is more widespread, while Adam's fanbase is deeper and more fanatical. I love both of them, but I voted for Kris because his is the album that I want to own before Christmas. Some of us appreciate vulnerability and emotional connection over vocal bombast.

I have come to enjoy watching Adam more and more every day especially from now on ...so I think things have come to full circle now :)

adam had the winning points by a long way. I do think that religion (churches) should not get involve in this type of talent (singing competition). american idol was looking for an artist, a great singer, not someone cute and a boy next door type like. good luck adam, can't wait to buy your first album and your concert in australia in the near future.

A lot of sore losers on this site with bizarre cheating theories. Adam belongs on Broadway. I would never by music by the screaming, makeup wearing freak. Kris deserved the title. Great voice, great interpretation of music, can actually play several musical instruments. A real cutie and I am not a teenager. Why is a "male" (just guessing here) writing an article for sheknows?

When Jamie Foxx was on Idol, who I think should be a Judge by the way, he told Kris Allen he would like to do a duet with him, wish they did it last night as a performance.

DWTS - Loved Gilles and Cheryl! He danced like he was a PRO all season! Him and Cheryl had incredible chemistry and they were so entertaining. Shawn and Mark were great, they worked so hard to prove themselves. I'm glad for them. Lil Kim was also excellent this season.

Kris Allen appeals to a much larger audience than Adam.He has a beautiful voice, creativity, good looks and he is humble! Kris and Matt Giraud should become huge stars, they have that Jon B/Robin Thicke style. Adam has incredible range, my fav performance of his was "Tracks Of My Tears", but all his other songs were too much "Queen"/"Kiss" style for me, they all sounded the same. Obviously Kris and Adam will both do very well.

I agree that Adam deserved to win, but this is definitely not the last we'll see of him!

I so agree with Kerry Adam did win America, even Kris admitted in on American Idol, he told America that Adam was the real winner. I was so shoked. As for Shawn Johnson, she deserved that win.

Kerry Kolsch May 21, 2009 | 5:11 AM

Kris did not win in any fair-minded way. His home state of Arkansas sent in 38 million votes. Arkansas has less then 3 million population. It had to be electronically generated votes. Only Arkansas voted to make Kris the AI, not the rest of the country. This is not an "upset" this is a little state stealing the title from the man who deserves it. No one should buy Kris's trash if he chose to win like this. Adam has talent and class that outshines Kris by miles. I will not watch American Idol again because this voting process is flawed. Adam won the hearts and minds of this country and he is my American Idol. Kris can go back to Arkansas with his "church" people who seem to think that it is all right to steal!
