James Bond takes Solace in $70.4 million box office debut

Quantum of Solace proved to be a huge payday for James Bond producers - the flick pulled in $70.4 million in its opening weekend, topping the previous Bond record, $47 million for Die Another Day.

Bond is running to the top of the charts The pull was $30 million more than the film's predecessor, 2006's "Casino Royal," which brought in around $40 million in opening weekend revenue. 9.8 million tickets were sold for Quantum of Solace.

"With Casino Royale, people were rediscovering the franchise in a way with Daniel Craig as James Bond," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony.

"Quite frankly, they loved it. They loved the movie, and they loved him in the role, so I think by the time `Quantum of Solace' was ready, audiences in the U.S. as well as the world audience was way ready."

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa slipped to the number two position in its second week in theaters, raking in $36.1 million.
