Lois Lane Talks!
When you tune in to Smallville this season on The CW, it may seem like a whole new show, that's because it kind of is. The series rolls into its eighth season beginning Thursday, September 18 and Erica Durance (Lois Lane) took some time out to talk with me about it before heading out to make some TV magic.
Smallville is moving more into the Superman mythology and everyone is coming into their own, says Erica. In the beginning, Clark was a teenager and he was just coming into his powers and this year he's more independent. He's becoming Superman.
And, to quote a superhero colleague of the man of steel, 'with great power comes great responsibility.'
We're dealing with more grownup issues and it's a lot edgier this season. And for myself, Lois gets to do a lot more.
With Lana, the love of Clark's life, gone out of the picture (actress Kristin Kruek will only appear in a few episodes this season) it's time for Lois Lane to step up to the plate. True to the Superman legend, the familial friendship between Clark and Lois will begin to change but don't expect it to happen right away. Our favorite crusading reporter isn't about to roll over for any man, even a super-man like Clark Kent!
Poor Clark used to have to deal with this girl who was so kind and sweet, Erica says with a laugh. And now he's got to put up with this girl who tells him what to do all the time.
Feisty and fiery, Lois Lane can be a handful. But how much Lois Lane is there in Erica Durance?
I'm not as confrontational as she is and I'm much quieter, too. You know how she makes inappropriate comments, I'm more of a live and let live type and she tries to force everybody to see it her way. But there is one trait Erica admits to sharing with her TV persona. I do have that stubborn side in me. The minute someone says I can't do something I have to prove I can.
After five years on Smallville, Erica Durance doesn't have to prove anything to anybody anymore. She weathered being the new girl on the show and now she's the one welcoming the newbies including Clark's new nemesis Tess Mercer played by Cassidy Freeman. Erica chose Cassidy as the cast mate she'd want at her side if she were stranded on a desert island. "She makes me laugh and she'd keep me alive. She's super tough, she could fight off all the monsters on the island," Durance says.
Sounds like Erica is surrounded by superheroes, and that's not a bad place to be. Watch Smallville Thursdays at 8:00 on The CW.
