Mad For Men

Stepping into the fictional Sterling Cooper offices on the Mad Men set, we feel as if we've stepped into an old magazine rather than a live set for one Emmy's biggest nominees.

Office of yesterday

Immediately walking into the fictional advertising offices, the row of typewriters immediately astounds.

There is something to this set that is magical. It is truly from another time.

Does this not look like fun?

Inside the homes

Life outside the office is as impeccably designed as the Mad Men office set.

From the living room to the kitchens, it is easy to see why this show is an Emmy favorite. The Academy adores programs that pay attention to this kind of detail. You'd be hard pressed to find detail more real than the set decor on Mad Men.

"The Office of Yesterday" here is utterly beautiful. Too beautiful for 1963, though. Many, many problems here. The carpeting would be orange or red, not gray. Gray is too muted. The Japanese-style frosted partitions with the bare wood (center) would not be there. The frosted glass on the offices may or may not be accurate. Selectric typewriters were chosen for the TV set (I've read) because they're pretty. Old-style typewriters were still prevalent in 1963. The paneling is too dark, and the desks would have been grey metal. The desk plant? 3 years too early. Nice try, though. In the home, Draper's carpet would have been orange and wall-to-wall. No bare floors in til 1984, thank you.
