Trip down memory lane: '60s & '70s TV

In the days before DVDs, before videotape -- heck, even before many of us had color TV -- plain ol' live television was a big deal. Here's a look at a few videos from some of the most memorable (if not truly the best) TV shows from the Gen Xers' childhood years.

The Banana Splits Adventure Hour

Here's another kooky TV show that mesmerized me and oodles of other preschoolers/kids: "The Banana Splits Show." It only ran from 1968 to 1969.

For me, the actual plot of any given "Banana Splits" episode isn't nearly as memorable as the "Tra La La" theme song (can't get it out of your head!) and the opening credits, filmed at a couple different amusement parks. Check it out:

Want to sing along? Come on!

The Banana Splits theme song

(aka The Tra-la-la song)

The Banana Splits TV showTra-la-la, la-la-la-la (x4)

One banana, two banana
Three banana, four
Four bananas make a bunch
And so do many more
Over hill and highway
The banana buggies go
Comin' on to bring you
The Banana Splits Show

Makin' up a mess of fun (x2)
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra-la-la, la-la-la-la (x4)

Four banana, three banana
Two banana, one
All bananas playing in the bright warm sun
Flippin' like a pancake, poppin' like a cork
Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper an' Snork

Makin' up a mess of fun (x2)
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra-la-la, la-la-la-la (x4)

Two banana, four banana
One banana, three
Swingin' like a bunch of monkeys
Hangin' from a tree
Hey there everybody
Won't you come along and see
How much like banana splits
Everyone can be

Makin' up a mess of fun (x2)
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra-la-la, la-la-la-la (x4)

Not too surprisingly, "The Banana Splits Show" was another program that came from (in part) the wild and wacky world of Sid & Marty Krofft.

Here's a clip from one episode of "The Banana Splits Show":
