Ellen DeGeneres Was Adorably Awkward at 15 Years Old, & We Love It

You probably won't recognize 15-year-old Ellen DeGeneres

In honor of Season 15 of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which premieres next week on Sept. 5, Ellen DeGeneres shared a picture of her 15-year-old self, and it's hard to believe it's actually her.

The photo shows DeGeneres with a mop of curly brown hair and a little smirk on her face, probably taken around 1973 if the math is correct. DeGeneres was born January 26, 1958.

It's crazy to imagine DeGeneres at this age. She was a far cry from the public figure we see today. She didn't even come out to the public until 1997.

When she did, she was iconically featured on the cover of Time with the words, "Yup, I'm gay." And she did an interview with Diane Sawyer on 20/20 shortly after that, adding, "I decided this was not going to be something that I was going to live the rest of my life being ashamed of."

No doubt, DeGeneres would have made her 15-year-old self very, very proud.

This isn't the first time DeGeneres has shared photos from her youth. She even brought her prom date onto her show back in 2011 along with a photo of the two of them off to the big dance.

"We both changed," DeGeneres said at the time of her and her date, Richard. Yup, that about sums it up. Better still, it about sums up how we all feel while looking back on prom.

DeGeneres ended her tweet by encouraging fans to share their awkward 15-year-old photos on Twitter too. I think I'll keep mine tucked safely away in my mom's closet, thank you very much.
