Leah Remini and Kevin James proved they're a solid pair when they co-starred alongside one another on King of Queens.
Now, they're reuniting to team up for James' new show, Kevin Can Wait. But Remini's entrance to the show isn't all smooth sailing — Erinn Hayes' character is being killed off to make room for Remini.
"The character will have passed away," CBS higher up Thom Sherman told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour. "We will be moving forward in time catching up at a later date."
It's clear they really wanted Remini on board if they were willing to suddenly kill a character off between seasons. That kind of disruption could throw fans for a loop. But after Remini appeared as a guest star on the Season 1 finale, her natural chemistry with James clearly made producers want her on the show full time.
Sherman also explained why it was necessary to have Hayes' character suddenly die before the start of Season 2 rather than be written out of the show over the course of a new storyline.
"The discussions went on," he said. "We talked about other things. Ultimately, this [...] was decided with the producers that this was the best way to move forward."
Remini officially announced in early June that she was going to be joining the cast of Kevin Can Wait full time. The same day, Hayes announced her sudden departure.
"True, I've been let go from the show," she tweeted on June 3. "Very sad, I had a great experience season 1. Thank you for all the support from our wonderful fans."
The new season of Kevin Can Wait premieres Sept. 25 on CBS.
