Troian Bellisario Gets Real About Her Struggle With Anorexia

The Pretty Little Liars star is starting a big conversation

Troian Bellisario has taken her Pretty Little Liars fame and used it to fuel some important conversations with her new movie, Feed. The movie, which she wrote and stars in, is based on her own experience with anorexia and follows a girl struggling with an eating disorder after the death of her twin brother.

Bellisario spoke to Huffington Post about the film, which she hopes will start a conversation about eating disorders. "It’s a challenging time for this community because talking about it always brings up feelings, but I think it’s also really important for us to be open in our conversations and not be treated as a taboo subject because eating disorders are alienating," she said.

Feed comes just on the heels of Netflix's film about eating disorders called To the Bone, which stars Lily Collins as a young girl struggling to recover. To the Bone's depiction of eating disorders has caused a lot of controversy. But Bellisario isn't shying away from the conversation just because it's a tough one to have.

"They are isolating," Bellisario said of eating disorders, "and they leave you to feel like nobody understands your experience and you’re suffering alone, and that’s actually how they’re designed to keep you in a place of pain. You know that your disorder is screaming so loud when it tells you, 'You can’t ever tell anybody about this because you’ll never get out and nobody will understand you or help you.' So, I think the fact that we’re talking about it and making treatment not scary but a possibility for people, I think it’s a really important conversation, as challenging as it might be."

Feed is now on iTunes and on demand.
