It blows my mind that in the 21st century people still get irked by the idea of a woman on her period.
But the irking isn't even the real issue, unfortunately. It's going way past "irked" in a lot of the world. Specifically in India, where 23 percent of women drop out of school due to menstruation because they reportedly don't have the proper supplies to get through the day — 23 percent!
It really makes you realize the value of a tampon.
And Meghan Markle is making menstruation education one of her key platforms so no woman is denied an education because she has a period.
In an essay Markle wrote for Elle U.K., she detailed her time visiting the slums of India and shared her insight about the education problem for women.
"During my time in the field, many girls shared that they feel embarrassed to go to school during their periods, ill equipped with rags instead of pads, unable to participate in sports and without bathrooms available to care for themselves, they often opt to drop out of school entirely."
She continued, "Beyond India, in communities all over the globe, young girls' potential is being squandered because we are too shy to talk about the most natural thing in the world. To that I say: we need to push the conversation, mobilize policy making surrounding menstrual health initiatives, support organizations who foster girls' education from the ground up, and within our own homes, we need to rise above our puritanical bashfulness when it comes to talking about menstruation."
Can you imagine dropping out of school because you don't have the proper access to health care to deal with something that in the United States is a bodily function that is easily managed?
I had no idea that this was such an issue in parts of the world that nearly a quarter of women weren't able to continue with their education.
Markle definitely picked a cause worthy of talking about. Hopefully, she'll speak more on the topic and how we can help effect positive change.
