This Sunday's Westworld Season 1 finale probably won't answer all of the show's burning questions, but it will answer some. The last two episodes leading up to the finale — "Trace Decay" and "The Well-Tempered Clavier" — have revealed a lot about the S1 intrigue, but many mysteries still remain for the season finale, "The Bicameral Mind," airing Sunday, Dec. 4.
What will happen in the Westworld finale is truly anybody's guess, and with so many fan theories, it can be hard to tell just what details are actually clues to the show's season finale. Luckily, HBO released four photos from "The Bicameral Mind" that just might provide us with a few early answers. At the very least, these photos hint at the endgame of the season. Let's dive in.
Maeve (Thandie Newton) appears to be getting ready to make her big move in this photo from the Westworld season finale alongside her fellow hosts Hector (Rodrigo Santoro) and Armistice (Ingrid Berdal) with technician Felix, who has helped Maeve evolve past her pre-programmed consciousness. Based on their outfits, specifically Hector's workers uniform, it looks like Maeve is going to try to make a break for it or do something equally as dramatic to overthrow Westworld. Depending on different fan theories, she might be playing right into Arnold or Ford's plans, but what's certain is that she is going to shake things up.
This photo of Teddy (James Marsden) from the Westworld finale is a familiar image: a confused Teddy surrounded by dead bodies, not unlike his flashbacks to the massacre at Escalante. It's unclear when this photo takes place (in what timeline or narrative), but it looks like it might be a more contemporary scene based on Teddy's clothes. Or maybe we'll actually find out what happened in Escalante and the real identity of Wyatt! In the end, however, Teddy has not proven himself to be an entirely reliable narrator, so who knows if we can even trust what we see in this photo.
Well, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) seems to be traveling with the Man in Black (Ed Harris) toward the Maze in the season finale of Westworld. On the surface, this photo doesn't really reveal anything new, but if you look closely at the wooden cross, you'll see it clearly reads "Dolores Abernathy." It looks like Dolores will confront the fact that she has died before, many times, which would in theory bring her one step closer to total consciousness.
There are a few interesting details in this photo: Why doesn't Dolores have a tombstone? As noted by Entertainment Weekly, the bell on the marker was used to prevent people from being buried alive. Perhaps it is a sign of when Dolores was once decommissioned or a threat of some kind. And where are they exactly? It seems odd that the makers of Westworld would intentionally put a grave for one of their hosts on the property, so this could be a big clue about Ford's (or the Man in Black's) endgame.
Fitting with the apparent confirmation of multiple timelines in Westworld, Dolores' wardrobe — her dress as opposed to her shirt and pants — suggests this photo is in a past timeline. She isn't wearing her dress on her journey with the Man in Black in the "present," nor is she wearing it on her adventure with William in the "past," so this photo might take place even further back in time. Perhaps when she killed Arnold...
Everything about the Westworld season finale has been kept under wraps, but Wood, aka Dolores, did reveal one thing in an interview with IndieWire: "The only thing I can say about Episode 10 is I feel like a lot of people are going to get up on their seats and clap." Well, if that's the only real spoiler we're going to get, it's good enough for me.
