Sept. 20, 2016 will go down in history as the day that was hijacked by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I was only in the office for 10 minutes — I hadn't even gotten my coffee yet, which if you know me, is a problem — when my inbox, text messages, G-chats, Twitter feed and Facebook blew up with the news that Brangelina was calling it quits.
In a matter of seconds, the interwebs spiraled out of control. Jennifer Aniston revenge memes overtook social media and rumors about the split were being published in troves with a new name being thrown into the mix: Marion Cotillard.
Cotillard is Brad Pitt's co-star in their new movie Allied. According to Page Six, Jolie reportedly hired a private investigator and discovered Pitt was fooling around with Cotillard on set (and supposedly Russian hookers too).
Many other reasons for their split are already being suggested: Pitt's anger issues, his irresponsible parenting style and Jolie's ambitions to leave Hollywood for her humanitarian work, but the question remains: Did Brad Pitt cheat with Marion Cotillard, and who is she? Well, we don't have the answer to the first question — and we may never — but here's what we know about Pitt's alleged mistress (emphasis on alleged):
We already mentioned that she's co-starring in Allied with Brad Pitt, but Cotillard was a hugely successful actor years prior. In 2008, Cotillard won Best Actress in a Leading Role for La Vie en Rose and became the first (and only) actress to win an Oscar for a performance in the French language. She was nominated again in 2015 for Two Days, One Night but lost out to Brie Larson.
Since 2004, Cotillard's been nominated 15 times at the Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, Oscars and various film festivals across the globe.
While you may not know her name, you know the movies she's been in. Some of her biggest titles include Pretty Things, Big Fish, A Good Year, Public Enemies, Inception, Midnight in Paris, Contagion, Rust and Bone, The Dark Knight Rises, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, MacBeth, The Little Prince and April and The Extraordinary World. Her new films Allied (across from Brad Pitt) and Assassin's Creed are scheduled to be released later this year.
While it seems she's more dedicated to her acting career, Cotillard released a music video in 2010 performing "Take It All" and she's definitely got some pipes.
In 2013, Marion Cotillard played a prostitute in this controversial music video, which was suspected to be criticizing the church. David Bowie played Christ and Gary Oldman played a corrupt priest. You see Oldman (dressed as a Cardinal) dancing with Cotillard at first. Halfway through, crucifixion wounds suddenly appear on her hands and she screams, "You see this? This is your doing! You call yourself a prophet?" There is tons of other religious imagery too... I could probably spend an entire article trying to fully explain this video, but I'll leave that to you.
Cotillard was first chosen as the face of Dior's Lady Dior advertising campaign in 2008. Since then, she's been featured in many videos made by the brand, including an online mini-movie, a series of short films and a web-series titled Lady Dior Web Documentary. In 2012, she designed her own handbag called the "360° bag," and appeared on the cover of Dior Mag's first issue.
In 2014, she wrote, co-directed and starred in Snapshot in LA for Lady Dior.
Cotillard has worked as a spokesperson for Greenpeace since 2002. Over the years, she's contributed to many fundraising efforts for environmental protection and in 2010, traveled to Congo to visit rainforests being threatened by logging companies.
She's a huge advocate for climate justice, calling herself a "climate defender" and often posts landscape and scenic photos on her Instagram with no captions. She'd dropped hints about being friends with fellow "climate defender" Leonardo DiCaprio too.
Cotillard seems like a pretty cool, strong, driven woman, so let's hope she isn't involved in a Brangelina love triangle and it's just a lot of "well-placed insiders" blowing hot air.
Now I need to get that coffee.
