If Chris Noth ever tries to offer you career advice, we kindly suggest you move along — quickly.
While Noth may be a gifted actor, his talent clearly doesn't lie in doling out guidance to friends on what jobs to take. Just ask Mariska Hargitay. If she had listened to Noth years ago, Law & Order: SVU's Olivia Benson would not be the the icon she is today — and Hargitay's career would look very, very different.
"I shouldn't give advice ever," Noth said in a Tuesday appearance on Live with Kelly. "She may not remember this, but Mariska Hargitay... [Law & Order creator] Dick Wolf had us go to a baseball game and he invited Mariska and was going to offer her this part on Special Victims, Law & Order. I remember being on the subway on the way and she goes, 'I don't know whether to do this. What's Law & Order?' And I was like 'Don't do it!'"
Noth actually had the misguided notion that SVU wouldn't be a good move for Hargitay and told her to take on some stage work instead.
"Go do some regional theater," he told her.
Good thing she didn't, because SVU ended up being — as Noth puts it — the "longest running show ever."
Seriously, Noth? Regional theater over a show that is now going into its 18th season?
Now, let's just take a moment to imagine a world where Hargitay doesn't play Olivia Benson. The Benson/Stabler sexual tension wouldn't have been nearly as hot, we would have missed out on Hargitay's rough, yet somehow totally vulnerable portrayal of the detective as she tirelessly defends rape victims, and well, it would just suck not seeing Hargitay's gorgeous face light up our screens.
If Hargitay had taken Noth's advice almost 20 years ago, the course of history would have been changed forever — and a Benson-free existence is a world we don't want to live in.
