No one suspected that the Giudice family had an easy time in the weeks leading up to Joe's incarceration, but we certainly didn't think it was this explosive.
Monday's episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey gave viewers a glimpse into what was really going on behind the scenes in the Giudice household, and it wasn't good. Joe (who is currently serving time for mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud) was clearly having a tough time preparing for prison and began to drink excessively and have dramatic mood swings, which caused Teresa a great amount of distress, as she told the camera: "We only have a few weeks left together, and I know Joe is unraveling. I can see it. He is drinking more. He does have mood swings. He's just not dealing with it well."
In fact, at one point things became so heated that Joe told Teresa to "shut the fuck up" and claimed "I can't wait to leave. The only thing I'm going to miss is my kids."
These words must have really stung Teresa, who, having only recently returned from prison herself, was still transitioning into home life and obviously wanting to spend as much time as possible with her family before Joe's departure. Fortunately she realized that Joe's anger was misdirected and that he didn't mean what he was saying.
"I do feel bad for him," she said on the show, adding, "Because I know it's not him speaking — it's the alcohol. And I'm not trying to say it's OK, but leaving your family for a little bit is hard. I know dealing with this is stressing him out. I'm just going to support him and be there for him."
But it wasn't just Teresa who was shocked by her husband's behavior — his 15-year-old daughter, Gia, told her mom that it would be good for her dad to go to prison.
"He needs to go. It would be good for him," Gia said, later adding, "Just the way he acts, the way he talks with us sometimes, I just... I don't know. I think he needs to realize what he has so he can get his shit together."
Gia is clearly wise beyond her years, and she makes a very important point, but it was still tough for Teresa to swallow (probably because it really hit home). "It hurts to hear Gia saying this, because I know she loves her dad very much," Teresa later admitted. "There's a lot of anger towards Joe right now because of his drinking."
