After Britney Spears' tragic VMAs performance in 2007, it makes sense that she's nervous this year

We can't wait to see Britney Spears perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, and can you blame us? Spears has delivered some iconic VMA moments, like singing "I'm a Slave 4 U" while holding a giant python in 2001 and kissing Madonna on live television in 2003.

However, the last time Spears graced the VMAs stage, in 2007, she delivered a lackluster performance of her song "Gimme More." Critics claimed that Spears was lip-syncing and that she seemed disoriented and just plain out of it.

While Spears has performed on live television since then and even performed a medley of her greatest hits at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2016, this is her first time taking the VMAs stage in nearly 10 years.

So, it stands to reason that Spears is nervous about performing this year. She opened up about her VMAs performance of "Make Me..." with rapper G-Eazy during an interview on 103.5 KTU’s "Cubby and Carolina in the Morning" radio show while promoting her new album, Glory.

"I think there's something in the air at the VMAs. It's, like, electric. I can't really explain it," Spears told the radio show hosts. "Every time I've performed there, it’s always been one of those really big, nerve-wracking experiences, and the people that come — those celebrities — are just so much fun and different... I still get very nervous."

Spears isn't the only performer scheduled to take the 2016 VMAs stage. Rihanna, Ariana Grande with Nicki Minaj, The Chainsmokers with Halsey and Nick Jonas are also scheduled to perform, plus hopefully more surprise performers.

Catch Spears' performance on the VMAs tonight at 9/8c on MTV live from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
