OK, I have to be honest here. I've been shipping Laurel and Gareth ever since the very first episode of BrainDead. Although they are working on opposite sides of the political landscape, the attraction is definitely there and there's simply no denying it. However, it seems as if Episode 2's visit to the tax prom was only the beginning. In fact, in Episode 3 — "Goring Oxes: How You Can Survive the War on Government Through Five Easy Steps" — things moved faster than I expected them to. And now my dream of Laurel and Gareth getting together is already coming true. Kind of.
First of all, nothing says love like wanting to check on the livelihood and well-being of the other person. After Laurel hears that Senator Wheatus' representative's head exploded on what was nearly live television, she had to check on Gareth to make sure it wasn't him. And, as a result, her concern certainly made Gareth (and the audience) curious about her feelings toward him — while simultaneously aiding in providing Gareth with a promotion to Wheatus' chief of staff.
But, once again, all of that was just the tip of the iceberg. It was when Laurel went to get revenge on her dad's comments about her being spotted with Gareth at the tax prom that allowed things to get interesting. Not only was she ridiculously bold in essentially calling him up and asking him out, but he also played along with the notion of living up to the hype when they got to the bar. Laurel and Gareth both managed to achieve their own personal work goals, but they also joked around by holding hands. And then the moment I've been waiting for finally occurred: Laurel and Gareth kissed.
Now just excuse me as I break down the heart-stopping moment — because I just have to. For starters, the kiss was originally Gareth's idea. But after Laurel leaned in, the kiss just kept on going. However, that's when things got awkward. The notion of the kiss being "fake" suddenly turned into something way more real. Laurel then went to storm out of the bar after Gareth reassured her that it didn't mean anything. And that's when my heart broke.
You see, the issue here is that their relationship really can't go anywhere. When considering factors such as being each other's competition, having to constantly step on each other's toes, and having opposite beliefs and priorities in the spotlight, you know that someone is going to get hurt even more than Laurel was already. Plus, if either of them is personally affected by the space bugs, well then I have no idea what kind of chaos could go down.
So, what can a fan do? Sit tight, keep watching and try not to ship them too hard. Because them getting pretty close so soon can't mean that things will continue this way moving forward. No matter how much I secretly want them to just become a thing already.
