Kelly Bensimon opened up about her struggle with postpartum depression, and it's something many women can relate to.
The former Real Housewives of New York star said that after the birth of her first child, she felt isolated, anxious and hated being alone with her baby.
"I had postpartum really bad [with my first child]," Bensimon told People magazine's Mom Talk series. "I couldn't drive, I had anxiety, I didn't want to be by myself.
"My ex-husband had just left to go traveling, and I was with this child by myself," she says. "I was so young and none of my friends had kids, and I just… I was petrified.
"It was on and off for like two years," she continued. And making it worse was that she had neither the information nor the support we have available online today, since this was close to 20 years ago.
"I had no one to defer to except research material from, like, the ice age," Bensimon said, adding that internet info and groups make it a little easier for today's new moms.
"When I was having a child, women were not really open to talking about the good and the bad things," she adds. "You guys seem very open about ‘There's good, bad and there's ugly.'
"And a lot of women are like, ‘No no no, it's perfect, it's all great,'" Bensimon continued. "And I'm like, ‘I'm not great. I'm not feeling good.'"
Eventually the fog cleared, but it took two years and a second pregnancy.
