On the first part of the Teen Mom 2 reunion, Dr. Drew spoke with Jenelle and Leah (mostly Jenelle, since her segment was super long). During Jenelle's segment, we learned various things: Jenelle's ex-boyfriend Kieffer Delp returned for a one night only appearance, Nathan really needs to get rid of the tiny ponytail he seems very into and Jace's behavioral issues are being addressed with meds, which folks on Twitter have serious feelings about. What we already knew, but which Dr. Drew felt compelled to point out in a manner that definitely qualified as shaming, is that Jenelle has two children with two different fathers.
Really, Dr. Drew? Of all of Jenelle's issues, this is what you're choosing to criticize her for? There are so many to pick from, not to mention the fact that there is no shame in having multiple kids with multiple people. It's one model of a family, and people can make their own decisions as to who fathers their children based on what's best for them. (The dudes who have fathered Jenelle's kids are not the best humans, but that's not the point. She can still have multiple fathers for her kids.) Also, Jenelle is hardly the first teen mom to have more than one kid or to have another kid with a man who didn't father her first kid.
Dr. Drew has a really disturbing record of shaming the young moms — for getting pregnant, for getting pregnant again, for deciding they don't want to go through hell to stay with their children's fathers, for making choices about their children, etc. The shaming makes the reunions really uncomfortable to watch and, I would bet, to participate in. It's a good thing they only happen once a season, and in the meantime, I hope the moms on stage, or those watching, aren't internalizing Dr. Drew's problematic messages.
