American Grit's romance came to a sudden and disappointing end
All may be fair in love and war, but it's never fun to see a cute reality TV couple broken up for the sake of competition. Sadly, this is exactly what we witnessed during tonight's episode of American Grit, when everything fell apart for the adorable Ashley "Haze" Hazlett and Cam Zagami. I always knew the competition would get in the way of their slowly evolving romance, but this sense of foreboding did not prepare me to see Hazlett cast aside her boy toy so quickly.
The romance's demise was particularly tragic in light of Hazlett and Zagami's first official date. After a not-so-private makeout session, the two decided to take the next step in their relationship and enjoy a romantic dinner together, complete with wine. Although there was a brief moment of awkwardness in which the two acknowledged the possibility of going up against one another, the evening was, all in all, a huge success. They ended with a smooch and Hazlett admitted it was the best first date she'd ever had.
Apparently, the ideal response to a great first date is to throw your new guy under the bus. Flush with excitement after learning that she'd be going up against Zagami in the Circus and that she could choose one teammate to be at her side as a support system, Goldie Knocks suggested that Hazlett join her. At this point, Hazlett couldn't exactly back down. Still, her eagerness to undermine her new beau was a bit disconcerting.
Knocks and Hazlett clearly knew what they were doing, because Zagami was definitely thrown off by his favorite lady's presence on the Circus platform. There's no guarantee he would have won the event — especially as it was the type of balancing challenge that favors the calm and collected Knocks — but the added distraction certainly didn't help matters. He did his best, but ultimately was unable to hold it together. His response to this loss was heartbreaking — he seemed more upset about not getting another evening with Hazlett than he was about not winning the competition.
I found Knocks and Hazlett's strategy a bit off-putting, and if Twitter's any indication, I was not alone. Several upset viewers took to social media to share their disappointment.
I understand the role of strategy in reality TV competitions and I know that Hazlett needs to do whatever it takes to win. However, her approach simply did not feel worthy of a show like American Grit, which is supposed to be all about strength of character.
If there's a silver lining to all of this, it's that Zagami clearly forgave Hazlett. The two are constantly pictured on Instagram together, so it looks like they're still an item! I'm disappointed with Hazlett, but I wish her and Zagami all the best.
