The Vampire Diaries finale was so heartbreakingly romantic I can't stand it

I needed a constant stream of wine and tissues to deal with The Vampire Diaries finale

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 has admittedly had its ups and downs, but tonight's finale was so good in so many ways that it was definitely the cherry on top of the sundae.

There were so many ups and downs, near-deaths and touching moments that, yeah, I cried. I'm woman enough to admit it. I needed that tissue box and the wine to keep on coming tonight, and it was glorious.

First of all, let's talk about Benzo's most romantic moment yet. Granted, Bonnie almost staked him in the heart... but it was completely touching nonetheless.

"Wait, Enzo's still alive? I thought I waited long enough," Damon (Ian Somerhalder) of course, pipes in with comedic relief after the tension faded.

And then, of course, there was Alaric's confession to Caroline, and her return to Stefan's arms.

"I lied earlier. There was a thaw," Caroline told him, which obviously led to the kiss we've all been waiting for. Yes! Yes! And yes!

Plus, Alaric assured Caroline that the two of them, with their twins, would always be a family — even if (and when) Caroline chose Stefan (Paul Wesley).

Can we take a moment to appreciate the man that is Alaric? The show had better give him a woman of a woman in Season 8. Jo was awesome! Until she died. He deserves someone that sees him for the gem he is. I hope he finds the girl of his dreams — finally — in Season 8.

But the moment that really had me sobbing was Matt's big moment with Penny's maybe ghost.

I definitely didn't expect this to be the one that got the tears flowin', especially because I've been pretty over Matt this season. Still, seeing him pinned under the dashboard of a car was enough for me to realize that getting out of Mystic Falls was the best decision he could ever make.

I'm sad to see him leave the show, but I also think those final scenes he was given showcased the importance of him moving forward, and that was a beautiful moment to witness.

P.S. Is it bad that I'm excited for more bad Damon and Enzo in Season 8? Now those are some villains!
