Tyler Baltierra slut-shames women while defending Catelynn Lowell (VIDEO)

I am an English Literature major at Long Island University. I am the Head Copyeditor for the school newspaper the Pioneer. In my spare time I impulsively watch the Twilight Saga in one sitting more times than I care to admit. I am also a...

Teen Mom's Tyler Baltierra tried to send a great message – but ended up degrading women, instead

We all know Tyler Baltierra, husband of Teen Mom star, Catelynn Lowell. I know I am not only speaking for myself when I say that his wedding vows brought me to tears. Recently, Baltierra made a video response to the question: "You're a very attractive man, but you also have a lot of personal integrity. Is it hard to resist temptations that are presented to you as far as advances from other women?" In his response, while trying to defend his romantic love story with Lowell and why they are a perfect match, Baltierra slut-shames in order to prove his case as to why he would never give in to sexual advances from other women. Hold on... are you kidding me?!

We constantly see how much both he and Lowell love each other, and to be honest, there is no reason why he should have to prove that to the world. It's evident in all of the Teen Mom footage that they were meant to be. But at what point does he find it necessary, in order to defend his case to prove that he would never give into sexual advances, he has to slut-shame and use profanity to get his point across. Can't you just explain why you love Lowell and then move on?

In the beginning Baltierra finds himself stumbling over his words, trying to explain just how much he loves Lowell. Baltierra brushes up on why love is more than just looks to him and that people need to stop being so superficial, claiming that everyone needs to "stop being so fixated" on the way everyone looks. He clarifies perfectly how he is in love with Lowell's soul and that they are perfectly "meshed" together as one.

To begin his defense, he tried to articulate that love and relationships, and even marriage, have to do with a deep connection with the soul, and that you are beyond looks at a certain point. You fall in love with the person and who they are, which he says is what he values and focuses on the most. Yeah, that's pretty beautiful and well-said, but to be honest, what he says next kind of made me disregard all of that. Baltierra makes not one, but two slut-shaming comments to explain why he would never cheat on Lowell. How about you just don't cheat on her — period. Why do you have to degrade women to validate why you won't entertain another woman?

More: Teen Mom Catelynn Lowell makes a surprising confession about her health

At exactly 1:12, Baltierra begins to delve into all the reasons why it's not hard for him to pass up an advance from another women. His reason? Because, in his own words, "those women who advance on to [him] or make these kind of things towards [him] are usually whores." Yes, that's right, he used some of the most hateful terminology, that I myself do not even use in my vocabulary. Baltierra then proceeds — oddly enough this is his thought process — to say that you "can't turn a whore into a housewife." Interesting Mr. Baltierra, is that the only basis you have for not cheating on the beautiful Catelynn Lowell? Come on — you are better than this.

Personally, I had to stop the video and was not interested in watching it any further. But of course I continued, hoping that there was a semblance of redemption towards the end, although it is extremely hard to come back from that. Well, to support his theory of not being able to turn a "whore into a a housewife," he tries contrasting Lowell with this terminology. He explains how she is classy and that she has dignity and self-respect. All of these qualities are what are attractive to Baltierra.

He finishes the video by giving advice to those women he addressed so poorly by telling them that they should be "picky" — whatever that means — and to hold their standards high. Finally, it's almost over, and Baltierra's closing statement is this: "No it's not hard, temptations or whatever from other women, they are not really temptations to me, but that's because it's off my radar." We are glad you found your soulmate Tyler, and like you said, you are very lucky to have found her so young, and you will have a wonderful life with her. However, try not to use such hurtful vocabulary — it will never help your cause.
