How Kate Mansi’s exit will affect Days of Our Lives

Is it the end of 'Chabby' on Days of Our Lives?

What had been rumored for months on soap fan sites was confirmed by Days of Our Lives star Kate Mansi on Wednesday — she’s leaving the long-running soap. The departure of the daytime star from the show leaves viewers to ponder how this will affect the Abigail story line.

For Mansi, the decision didn’t come easily. She wrote to her fans on Instagram.

"I want to be very clear in saying that this was not a decision I took lightly," she said. "It was important for me to see Abigail through the most recent storyline (sic), as well as through the show's historic 50th anniversary celebration. I can confidently say that I poured everything I had into Abigail, especially this last year, and cannot wait for you to see what's coming!"

The 27-year-old actress’ last episode will air in May since DOOL shoots about five-and-a-half months ahead of time. NBC refused to comment to Us Weekly as to whether the role will be recast, but noted there was a casting call for the contract role of Val. The site speculated it might be a recasting for Abigail instead.

This departure also leaves a big question mark in a DOOL story line that has been important to the show over the last year. Abigail has been involved in a love triangle with Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) and Salem’s resident serial killer, Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson).

At the Day of Days fan event in November, Mansi told SheKnows Soaps that she relished the story line created for her by the writers.

"This story was one of the most powerful stories I have ever worked on as an actor because we worked on it so intensely,” she said. “It was challenging, heavy material, so it was really rewarding.”

With recent spoilers hinting at a possible Chabby engagement and Ben’s return to Salem, the last few months of Mansi’s time on the show are going to be explosive.

Even though Mansi chose to leave the show of her own accord, NBC’s tight lips just might indicate a recasting of Abigail.

The role has been played by seven other actors since October 1992 — twins Meghan and Michael Nelson, twins Paige and Ryanne Kettner, Megan Coletto, Jillian Clare and Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson.

Mansi took over the role when the character returned in 2011.
