Dunham is on what looks like a lovely beach vacation, soaking up the sun on a fluffy towel, reading a good book in her bikini — just like many of us on our own holidays when we are lucky enough to enjoy one. But she may not have bargained for the incredibly toxic reactions of many commenters — and seriously, each was worse than the last.
"Not her natural habitat but she's trying her darnedest!!!" Dunham wrote.
The responses were swift and cruel.
"We get it. You are fat and 'normal.' Stop posting such heinous photos to be ironic," wrote bhleaman.
"Could this fat bitch be any uglier?!!" wrote msnunii.
"No matter how successful you are, you're still a mess. Ugh," wrote aleesha74.
"Put some clothes on you nasty ass hag," wrote jerseysprincess.
"She is a child molester," wrote jcee292.
"MOOOOOOOO I mean I'm kinda chubby but daaaaaaaaamn you need weight watchers," wrote fox2k16.
"Fat and a dyke? F***ing gross," wrote ryan.n.narcisse.
"Why post pictures of whales? Oh… wait… second look and I feel bad for insulting whales," wrote time69lord.
"Eww! Shave those nasty pits!" wrote andreamaterka85.
"Ugh. I just puked on my shirt, the floor, the peope round me, yada yada. There's so much puke because her sloth looking ass made me throw up my food…" wrote bigboyjeans.
"Alright. Enough. We get it. You're proud to be unattractive," wrote shithawk.
Dunham is an outspoken supporter of being body confident regardless of size and shape, and as she told Marie Claire U.K. in October 2013, she really DGAF what anyone else thinks.
"Sometimes I will be like, 'I feel bloated or outside myself today.' But it's so funny; sometimes I'll see a picture of myself and be like, 'Oh, that's not my best angle,' but I just carry on," she told the magazine.
And she has always felt that way. "This could very easily be taken out of context and I think it's funny now, but I remember looking in the mirror as a kid and it would be like for an hour at a time and I'd be like, 'I'm just so beautiful. Everybody is so lucky that they get to look at me,'" she told Marie Claire. "And of course that changes as you get older, but I may have held on to that little kid feeling that was me alone in my bathroom."
