On Monday, Raven-Symoné took to Instagram to share a picture of her birthday look, which included brightly colored dreadlocks. She captioned the post with, "Last night @beglammednowworked their magic and made me feel fabulous for my bday party!!! Y'all should check them out! It's like uber for hair and makeup :)."
Her intentions were no doubt to share her look with fans, but it's unlikely she anticipated the backlash from critics, who were quick to blast her for cultural misappropriation. Comments on the post included one from pink._print who wrote, "If you're dark white then your dreadlocks are appropriating black culture, the one you don't claim but feed on so much."
Shafluffykins blasted her for being, "like one of those white people that wears the stupid fake dreads," and hypocritigal wrote, "Oh now u wanna be black."
Commenting on the hate that the picture received, ayo_bigshawn wrote, "I don't think people are hating; people are simply stating that she appears to be eating her words. She disclaimed her race, and then said she wouldn't hire people with black names, yet she dresses and styles herself similar to the same people she attacked/targeted... I won't deny that she is talented, because she is. But the brilliance of her mind and talent is completely destroyed by the ignorance of her mouth."
It's no secret that the remarks Raven-Symoné's made during an interview with Oprah Winfrey on Oprah: Where Are They Now? back in May have left many angry and disappointed in her. But is the backlash deserved?
