Après Ski: Elise and Bobby's showdown causes a stir on Twitter

Ever since Allyson Koerner can remember, she's been in a committed relationship — with the entertainment and TV world, that is. After receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in English and journalism, respectively, she's been living...

Kendra's job as the 'butler' on Après Ski creates a lot of controversy amongst viewers

When it comes to Bravo's latest series, Après Ski, it's a show you either love or you hate. After Monday's episode, fans are mostly hating on the Whistler-based series. I have a feeling viewers won't be tuning in after that argument between Bobby and Elise. In the matter of a short few minutes, their fight escalated into something that has fans talking and causing quite the stir across Twitter.

During the episode, two clients wanted someone to be their "butler," so they had someone who would cater to their every need. Seeing as Bobby was in charge this time around, the job came down to either Kendra or Charlotte. Both said they didn’t want the job, but seeing as Char is Bobby’s BFF, Kendra ended up taking on the role of "butler." She was not happy, to say the least.

The drama didn’t stop there. At the end of the episode, Kendra’s "butler" position was brought up again at dinner. Bobby pointed out that he would never give that job to Char because she is his best friend. He even admitted to playing favorites. The way he said it, though, irked Elise, who called him out for making Kendra the "butler" because she is black. As I’m sure you can imagine, Bobby and Char were both immediately offended and couldn’t believe Elise would make such an accusation. They were both disgusted and said Kendra being black had nothing to do with her taking on the role of the "butler."

Furthermore, during dinner, Char said Elise looked "very Hawaiian," which caused an entirely different discussion. Once again, Char and Bobby defended the remarks. As for Kendra, she stood up for Elise, who didn’t understand why she was being called out for her outfit, all while being labeled "Hawaiian."

The episode closed leaving Bobby and Elise’s showdown open-ended, but I’m sure we’ll see the aftermath during next Monday’s episode. Until then, let’s look at how Twitter is reacting. There are many viewers who are appalled by Bobby with some pointing out the "racism," "favoritism" and "microaggression" being featured throughout, whereas other viewers see it an entirely different way.

This is definitely something that Elise, Bobby, Kendra and Char all need to sit down and discuss openly and rationally. If they let it fester without both sides explaining their feelings and viewpoints, then there is no way they can work together successfully. Here’s hoping they can figure things out and learn something in the process.

Après Ski airs Mondays at 10/9c on Bravo.
