The blond beauty took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a picture of herself in a lion Halloween costume, but according to E! News, she captioned it with a pretty insensitive remark. Benson wrote, "Help! Can't decide on my Halloween costume this year! What do you guys think of this cecil the lion costume? @Yandy #ThanksYandy #Halloweencostume."
The part about Cecil (the lion that was killed by an American dentist this past summer) has since been edited out, and that was a good call, because even without the controversial caption, the reaction to Benson's outfit has not been great.
"It's a shame lions can't wear dead ignorant humans as costumes. Totally unaware douche," paradise_law_stI wrote — and they are not the only person concerned with Benson's choice of costume.
tina_is_so_awesome shared similar sentiments, writing, "Originally you called it "Cecil the Lion!" #clueless #smh #insensitive."
"I hope that's fake fur!" user patchez1989 wrote. Another user, louisakarinhad, had similar thoughts. She wrote, "love it but you have to wear faux fur."
Some critics even went so far as to call out Benson for being "desperate." As dalifemme77 wrote, "Out of everything, you picked this? Looks like someone was desperate for press." Yikes.
UPDATE, Oct. 8: Ashley Benson has noted the backlash that her previous caption caused and took to Instagram to apologize for the post, which she stated was in "poor taste."
