Samantha grew up on Cape Cod before eventually moving to New Bedford. After graduating from New Bedford High School, she worked in the local middle school, Normandin, as the drama club director for several years.
At age 26, she is the oldest of six kids. As she said in her introduction on America's Got Talent, she often takes on “a mother-type role" among her siblings.
During her auditions in front of the AGT judges, Johnson sang Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Her rendition got a standing ovation from the show's four judges and some high praise from Cannon. “Sangin’,” the host said. “You make me feel.” Looks like those feelings have continued.
Johnson earned multiple standing ovations throughout her run on America's Got Talent. She was eventually eliminated in the show's semifinals, when she earned fewer votes than The Craig Lewis Band in the Judge's Choice round.
Johnson first tried out for Fox’s American Idol at the ages of 16 and 18. She then auditioned for AGT at the age of 20, but didn't make it on.
It ended up working out in the end — she went on to perform in the London-based Michael Jackson tribute show Thriller Live, which she says helped prepare her for finally making it on AGT this past season.
“Music is a part of who I am. I’ve known forever, since I could start talking and making noise, that there’s nothing else I’d want to do," Johnson told The Boston Globe. "My mom is a flute player — she studied at The Boston Conservatory — and I started playing her flute when I was 4."
In high school, Johnson was active in theater, and she's continued her stage work ever since. According to her AGT profile, she's appeared in over 20 productions in 11 countries.
Johnson often tweets about her music and shares her original songs and covers on her personal SoundCloud page.
According to OK! magazine, Cannon and Johnson tried to keep things strictly professional while they were on the set of the show, but their chemistry was obvious. "Everyone knew they were hooking up," a source allegedly told the magazine.
Johnson bears a notable resemblance to Cannon's famous ex-wife and according to OK!, Cannon loves that. As the publication writes, "He’s gotten a kick out of comparing their smiles."
