Was BET Awards wrong to cut to Rihanna during Chris Brown's performance?

We all knew the BET Awards couldn't happen without drama.

But what actually happened during the show was pretty low and had a lot of viewers upset. During Chris Brown's performance, the cameras cut to a close-up of Brown's ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

The two had a tumultuous relationship, during which he pleaded guilty to the 2009 assault that left Rihanna bloody and battered. According to police affidavits published shortly after the attack, Brown, 19 at the time, beat Rihanna in a rented sports car on their way to the Grammy Awards, punching her repeatedly, biting her and choking her until she nearly lost consciousness. Brown fled the scene, but he later turned himself in. His felony probation that resulted from the attack was only lifted earlier this year.

A no-contact order prevented Brown from reaching out to Rihanna but was later lifted when the two began dating again. They broke up soon after, but they have worked together a number of times since, collaborating on three songs since 2009.

The close-up of RiRi during Brown's performance didn't go over well with fans, several of whom called BET "petty" on Twitter.

Luckily, it looks like RiRi came prepared not to take any crap from anyone, especially Brown. She was in the audience armed with a roll of duct tape.
